Sanford resident, Karen Matthews, just published her first book, “The Legend of Lizard Lick.”  This whimsical illustrated children’s book is a “made for children” fictional tale about the origins of the community of Lizard Lick in North Carolina.  the book is illustrator by award-wining artist from Chapel Hill, Josh Taylor.

Karen will be appearing at the Book Corner in the Shops of Steele Street, 102 S. Steele Street, Sanford, North Carolina, on Saturday June 1, from 10 AM until 1 PM.  The public is invited to meet Karen, purchase a copy of the book, and get it signed by the author.

Karen got the idea for the story over sixteen years ago when she lived in Wendell, North Carolina, just down the road from Lizard Lick.  She was disappointed to learn that Lizard Lick’s name may have had something to do with lizards licking liquour on a fence next to a government still. Her son was young at the time, and she thought, “That is not something you can tell a child.”  So she decided to come up with a fanciful tale of her own, involving lizards and frogs feuding over the water that’s drying up in Sweetwater Pond during a drought.
